�� Paklijst voor een hotelovernachting met je hond: dit mag je niet vergeten!

Een nachtje of weekendje weg met je hond is altijd een goed idee. Samen nieuwe plekken ontdekken, lange wandelingen maken en ’s avonds ontspannen in een hondvriendelijk hotel. Maar om te zorgen dat jullie beiden onbezorgd kunnen genieten, is een goede voorbereiding belangrijk. Daarom heeft Bleecker's Choice een handige paklijst samengesteld met alles wat je nodig hebt voor een hotelbezoek met je hond.

�� Hondenspullen die je absoluut mee moet nemen

✔️ Hondenpaspoort en vaccinatieboekje
Deze documenten zijn niet alleen handig bij noodgevallen, maar soms ook verplicht bij de hotelreceptie of als je de grens overgaat.

✔️ Eten en drinkbakje
Neem de vertrouwde bakjes van thuis mee. Dat voorkomt stress en helpt je viervoeter zich sneller op z’n gemak te voelen in een onbekende omgeving.

✔️ Hondenvoer en snacks
Zorg dat je voldoende van zijn eigen voeding bij je hebt. Ook wat extra’s meenemen, zoals favoriete snacks of kauwbotjes, is slim voor onderweg of als beloning. Of voor als je besluit een nachtje langer te blijven!

✔️ Hondenriem, halsband en eventueel een extra (lange) lijn
Een stevige lijn en halsband (met penning) zijn onmisbaar. Een extra lijn kan handig zijn als je bijvoorbeeld een lange wandeling maakt en het is geen losloopgebied.

✔️ Hondenkussen of mand
Iets dat naar thuis ruikt, zoals zijn favoriete kussen of dekentje, helpt je hond sneller te wennen in het hotel.

✔️ Poepzakjes
Een echte must. In bijna alle landen en gebieden is het gelukkig verplicht om de uitwerpselen van je hond op te ruimen.

✔️ Speeltjes en kauwmateriaal
Neem wat van zijn favoriete speeltjes mee. Dat zorgt voor afleiding en voorkomt verveling in de hotelkamer.

✔️ Handdoek en schoonmaakdoekje
Voor natte poten na een regenachtige wandeling of een modderbad onderweg. Zo hou je ook de hotelier te vriend.

✔️ Borstel en verzorgingsspullen
Vooral handig als je naar een natuurgebied of bosrijke omgeving gaat. Zo houd je zijn vacht netjes en verwijder je snel vuil en losse haren.

✔️ Medicatie (indien van toepassing)

EHBO bij honden.

Weten wat je moet doen in een noodgeval kan van levensbelang zijn voor je huisdier. Een EHBO-kit in huis en voorbereid zijn op noodsituaties kan een groot verschil maken. Extra voorzorgsmaatregelen kunnen helpen om snel en adequaat te handelen als je bestie in gevaar is.

Wil je weten hoe je een noodgeval herkent, welke voorzorgsmaatregelen je kunt nemen en wat je nodig hebt in je EHBO-kit voor honden? Lees dan verder.

Wanneer heeft je huisdier direct hulp nodig?

Als je huisdier ernstig ziek of gewond is, moet je mogelijk direct naar de dierenarts. Maar wat kun je doen terwijl je wacht op medische hulp? Hier zijn eerst enkele veelvoorkomende signalen dat je hond dringend eerste hulp nodig heeft:

Moeite met ademhalen of geen ademhaling
Geen reactie op prikkels
Mogelijke botbreuken
Epileptische aanval of shock
Verstikking
Aanhoudend braken en diarree (langer dan 24 uur)
Ernstige bloedingen
Extreme allergische reacties
Problemen met bewegen of desoriëntatie
Vermoeden van vergiftiging
Zwakte of niet kunnen opstaan

Blijf in al deze situaties kalm en neem direct contact op met een dierenarts. Zorg ervoor dat je altijd de contactgegevens van je dierenarts bij de hand hebt.

Veiligheid voorop

Dieren kunnen onvoorspelbaar reageren als ze pijn hebben. Wees daarom extra voorzichtig en voorkom dat je gebeten of gekrabd wordt. Geef je huisdier geen eten of drinken, tenzij een dierenarts in eerste instantie telefonisch anders adviseert.

EHBO-gids en benodigdheden

Een EHBO-gids is wellicht een waardevolle aanvulling op je EHBO-kit. Deze bevat instructies over wat te doen bij onder andere:

Verstikking
Verkeersongevallen
Zonnesteek of epileptische aanval
Reanimatie
Verplaatsen van een gewond huisdier

Wat doe je als je huisdier stikt?

Trek voorzichtig de tong naar voren om te kijken of er iets vastzit.
Wees voorzichtig met je vingers in de mond van een dier.
Controleer of er een obstructie in de keel zit, maar duw deze niet verder.

Hoe controleer je de ademhaling en hartslag?

Kijk of de borstkas op en neer beweegt.
Voel of er lucht uit de neus of mond komt.
Controleer de hartslag door je hand of oor op de borstkas te plaatsen, bij de plek waar de elleboog de ribbenkast raakt.

Verplaatsen van een gewond huisdier

Ondersteun nek, hoofd en rug bij het optillen.
Gebruik een grote handdoek, deken of plank als draagmiddel.
Vraag om hulp bij zwaardere honden.
Houd je bewegingen langzaam en stabiel.
Zorg ervoor dat de omgeving veilig is en praat met een kalme stem.

Wat te doen bij bloedingen?

Spoel kleine wonden voorzichtig met warm water om vuil te verwijderen.
Oefen druk uit op een hevige bloeding met een steriel gaasje of verband.
Neem direct contact op met de dierenarts.

Door goed voorbereid te zijn en te weten wat je moet doen in een noodsituatie, kun je je trouwe viervoeter helpen en mogelijk zelfs zijn leven redden.

Bronkhorst | Hondvriendelijk weekend op pad

Weekendje weg met je hond? Bronkhorst is een verborgen pareltje!

Wist je dat Bronkhorst, met maar zo’n 155 inwoners, officieel de kleinste stad van Nederland is? Klinkt misschien als een gehucht, maar vergis je niet! Dit historische stadje, tussen het Gelderse Brummen en Zutphen, barst van de charme en is perfect voor een ontspannen weekendje weg – zeker als je een hond hebt!

De omgeving is echt super om te wandelen (het bekende Trekvogelpad loopt erlangs) en fietsen (fietsknooppunten genoeg). En het allerbeste? Er zijn veel plekken waar je hond lekker los mag rennen en snuffelen.

Herberg De Gouden Leeuw – hondvriendelijkheid op z’n best

Midden in Bronkhorst vind je Herberg De Gouden Leeuw . Hier zit je goed als je van lekker eten houdt én je viervoeter graag meeneemt. Honden zijn hier overal welkom: in het restaurant, op het terras en zelfs in de hotelkamers. Je hoeft dus niet te kiezen tussen een fijne overnachting en je trouwe maatje – die mag gewoon mee!

Een herberg met een verhaal

Dit hotel is niet zomaar een plek om te slapen. Het bestaat uit drie historische gebouwen:
�� Een burgemeesterswoning uit 1575
�� Een stadsboerderij uit 1650
⚙️ Een oude rosmolen uit 1750

Dus ja, als je hier overnacht, slaap je eigenlijk in een stukje geschiedenis. En het is ook nog eens een van de oudste stadsboerderijen van Nederland!

Nog wat leuke weetjes:

De herberg heeft twee stadsbranden overleefd, eentje in 1633 en eentje in 1666 (de laatste werd ironisch genoeg veroorzaakt door een vuurpot in de herberg zelf).
In de voormalige rosmolen zitten nog steeds ‘koeienogen’ – nee, geen echte, maar die ovale vensters die je in oude gebouwen ziet.
De herbergiers waren vroeger niet alleen uitbaters, maar ook brouwers, boeren en zelfs burgemeesters!
Herberg De Gouden Leeuw ligt pal tegenover de gerestaureerde Slotkapel uit 1344, dus als je even zonder hond op pad wil, kun je daar ook nog een kijkje nemen.

Februari is de maand van de gebitsverzorging bij honden. Een goed moment om stil te staan bij het belang van een gezond hondengebit! Veel hondeneigenaren vergeten dat een goede mondhygiëne niet alleen zorgt voor een frisse adem, maar ook essentieel is voor de algehele gezondheid van hun trouwe viervoeter...

Waarom is gebitsverzorging bij honden zo belangrijk?

Net als bij mensen kan tandplak zich ophopen op de tanden van jouw hond. Als je dit niet regelmatig verwijdert, verandert het in tandsteen, wat kan leiden tot tandvleesontstekingen en uiteindelijk tandverlies. Dit kan niet alleen pijn veroorzaken, maar ook invloed hebben op het eetgedrag van je hond. En laten we eerlijk zijn: een vrolijke kwispel en een blije hap zijn veel leuker dan een pijnlijke snauw!

Daarnaast kan een slechte mondgezondheid leiden tot een stinkende adem. Hoewel een (lichte) hondengeur normaal is, kan een echt slechte adem een teken zijn van onderliggende gebitsproblemen, en dat wil je toch niet? Bovendien kunnen bacteriën uit een ontstoken gebit in de bloedbaan terechtkomen en ernstige gezondheidsproblemen veroorzaken, zoals infecties aan het hart, de lever en de nieren. Kortom, een schoon gebit draagt bij aan een langer en gezonder leven voor je maatje!

Hoe houd je het gebit van je hond gezond?

Gelukkig kun je als baasje veel doen om de tanden van je hond gezond te houden!

Tandenpoetsen : Dit is de meest effectieve manier om tandplak te verwijderen. Gebruik een speciale hondentandpasta en een zachte borstel. Even poetsen, dan kunnen jullie weer samen stralend lachen!

Kauwsnacks en speeltjes : Speciale kauwsnacks en speeltjes helpen tandplak te verminderen en houden het gebit op een natuurlijke manier schoon. Een win-win: je hond is rustig en zijn tanden blijven sterk!

Regelmatige controles bij je dierenarts : Een jaarlijkse gebitscontrole helpt om problemen vroegtijdig te signaleren en te behandelen. Beter voorkomen dan genezen – of erger nog, trekken!

Omdat deze maanden in het teken staat van gebitsverzorging, is dit hét moment om extra aandacht te besteden aan de tanden van je hond. A post in Dutch on recue dogs and a good cause: Stichting Dierenlot . Wereldwijd zijn er meer dan 600 miljoen huisdieren zonder veilig huis. In Nederland hebben we gelukkig geen zwerfhonden zoals we dat allemaal wel gezien hebben in de landen rondom de Middellandse Zee (wist je trouwens dat onze Bleecker zelf ook een rescue dog is, als puppie door het dierenasiel in Overijssel uit Spanje naar Nederland gehaald). Maar het aantal zwerfkatten neemt nog elk jaar toe en nog steeds worden regelmatig huisdieren achtergelaten. Eigenlijk zijn we zeker dat rond de zomervakantie er toch ook nog steeds honden worden achtergelaten in de bossen, zeker nu het zo lastig is om een plekje te vinden in goede dierenhotels...

Food production is responsible for almost one-quarter of the environmental impact and, therefore, its importance regarding sustainability should not be overlooked. The pet population is growing, and an important part of pet food is composed of ingredients that have a high environmental impact. A Brazilian study aimed to evaluate the impact of dry, wet, and homemade pet diets on greenhouse gas emission, land use, acidifying emission, freshwater withdrawals, and stress-weighted water use.

The wet diets were responsible for the highest impact, and dry diets were the type of diet that least impacted the environment, with a positive correlation between the metabolisable energy provided by animal ingredients and the environmental impact.

Duizenden dieren in Oekraïne verkeren nog steeds in levensgevaar... 140.000 dieren riskeren nu de winter er aan komt al helemaal een hongerdood. De Oekraïense partner UPAW heeft op dit moment noodaanvragen voor meer dan 140.000 dieren. Vooral in de oostelijke en zuidelijke regio’s zijn er asielen die zonder water en elektriciteit zitten. Het voer is op, niet te verkrijgen of er is geen geld om voor zichzelf en de dieren te zorgen. De situatie is op veel plaatsen schrijnend. Daarom is onze noodhulp nu belangrijker dan ooit.

One the most significant social outcomes of the Covid-19 pandemic is a rise in dog ownership. Many benefit from having pets keep them company while working from home, but what happens when more employees start returning to the office?

Prior to the pandemic, ‘bring your dog to work day’ was a regular occurrence for companies such as Amazon, pet subscription company Bark and of course the co-working spaces as they have been dogfriendly from the beginning of their existence. Honden & Sylt. Het maakt niet uit wat voor soort je viervoeter is, echt alle honden houden van Sylt. Ja, Sylt, het meest noordelijke Waddeneiland, vlakbij Denemarken. Dat is pas een onverwachte voorjaarsbestemming! De secret hangout voor de Duitse rich&famous; iedereen laat elkaar hier in zijn waarde en komt om te genieten van zon, zee en stand. O ja, en lekker eten niet te vergeten!

Het eiland biedt 17 aangewezen "hondenstranden" van noord naar zuid. Hond en baasje kunnen hier naar hartenlust ravotten in het zand en golven. Er is een super uitgebreid aanbod aan accommodaties: veel verhuurders op Sylt hebben speciale hondenarrangementen gemaakt, "dogs first". Je hond kan je misschien niet bij elke activiteit begeleiden (tijd doorbrengen in de sauna of rondvluchten boven het eiland zijn zeker niet het ding van de hond ...), geen nood! Het dierenverblijf in Tinnum zorgt graag een paar uur voor je hond.

Natuurmonumenten | Losloopgebieden

In de hondenlosloopgebieden van Natuurmonumenten kunnen honden naar hartelust los spelen en rennen. Het zijn gebieden waar een gedeelte speciaal is ingericht voor loslopende honden. Natuurlijk, je zou het liefste je hond overal loslaten, dat begrijpen we maar al te goed! Er zijn echter echt goede redenen om het niet te doen. Al onze trouwe viervoeters hebben een jachtinstinct. Als een hond ‘wild’ ruikt, wordt dat instinct geprikkeld en wil ook jouw hond het dier dat hij ruikt opsporen. Bijna alle dieren in de natuur zijn bang voor honden. Ook voor honden die ‘niets doen’. Komt een hond te dicht in de buurt, dan schrikken de dieren op en vluchten weg. En dat kan toch echt nooit de bedoeling zijn!

Maar... Natuurmonumenten heeft een speciale lijst met de gebieden wat het wel mag, en die delen we graag. Want dat is het beste van twee werelden: lid zijn van deze prachtige organisatie en lekker lopen met de hond.

KNGF Geleidehonden (The Royal Dutch Guide Dog Foundation) trains guide dogs for visually impaired people and for people with other handicaps such as young children with autism, physically handicapped people in wheelchairs and people with PTSD. Established in 1935, the organisation has trained thousands of dogs for guide dog users in the Netherlands.

During Dutch Design Week 2020 social designer Imke Sloos invited future dog owners to her Dream Dog Workshop to design their own dog and assemble it from a variety of limbs, ears, heads, tails or furs. But as the pieces come together, the health risk of the aesthetic choices also become very obvious...

We call them our best friends, and yet we force dogs into shapes that complicate their ability to walk, breathe, eat or procreate. In an attempt to ‘optimise’ their loveable features, breeders create purebreds that are literally out of proportion. Cute heads, funny faces and fashionable hips cause painful and deadly diseases.

When visiting Eindhoven last week we have seen many socially and environmentally engaged projects, some of them seriously unsettling (what are we doing to our earth - geo-design Sands @Van Abbe Museum). But Imke Sloos' Graduation Show 2020 project stood out for us and deserve all the attention it can get.

This time a blogpost with a slightly different approach, not just the good things in (dogs)life. But please, when you are considering your dream puppy or doggy, do go and see your local animal shelter first, there is soo much good we all can do there :-)!

Sculpture Park Schwante | art, nature & dogs

Germany's brand new sculpture garden just outside Berlin – the perfect post-lockdown attraction for humans and their pooches. Yes, also dogs are more than welcome to wander around these newly opened spectacular sculpture gardens. A contemporary art collection in the grounds of a castle estate north-west of Berlin is a bold addition for this quiet part of Brandenburg.

The garden is the estate’s pièce de résistance. Originally designed in the English style popular at the time, it now combines landscaped and wilded sections dotted with fruit trees (cherries, plums, apples), as well as pendulous willows, proud (and fragrant) linden trees – and more than 20 international artworks placed up trees, in ponds, and semi-hidden within thickets.

It’s a fun way to enjoy art, and do not forget to visit the Farm Shop and relax at the Restaurant am Backsteinhaus at the heart of the Schlossgut Schwante.

Staying closer to home this year for your holidays has another advantage: the dogs can join the party. We noticed two more hotel companies realising that dog owners also want to sleep in hip and funky hotels.

The small boutique chain Max Brown Hotels (Amsterdam, Berlin, Duessedorf and Vienna) At Max Brown, they provide the basics at their very best: perfect coffee, heavenly beds and culturally vibrant locations. An ideal homebase to go out and explore the city with your pooch, or just to stay in and relax. In each hotel's social space, you'll always find someone up for a game, or just grab a book to enjoy with your drink from the bar.

Luxury chain Hard Rock Hotels will launch later this year their pet programme Unleashed including great merchandise for those of you collecting the T-shirts.

Outdoor fun | distant picnic 4 all

Slowly the world is unlocking and are our fourlegged friends ready for even more walks in the sun, combined with a nice picnic including crisp white wines and doggy treats. So, this social distancing picnic blanket is a 2020 summer must-have!

Paul Cocksedge, cofounder of Cocksedge Studio, has designed what he calls “Here Comes the Sun,” a picnic blanket most notable for the massive hole in its center. It’s essentially a large fabric ring with four equidistant circles around its perimeter, all two meters (or slightly more than six feet) apart.

But even though the outdoors poses less risk, it’s not a license to disregard social distancing rules. “It’s a moment to potentially reconfigure our lives to fit a rhythm that suits us better—an opportunity for change,” said Cocksedge in a statement. “Ultimately, people will want to get back to some sort of normality but that shouldn’t be at the expense of anyone’s health.”

No need to wait, you can actually make your own social distancing blanket with a free template provided by the studio. You’ll need a sewing machine, scissors, and measuring tape, and about nine square meters of fabric—the studio recommends a non-fraying material like felt.

Of course you know it, there are dogs that just love water. And Bleecker's Choice has a true inside tip for them, so do keep reading. Sure you can throw a ball in the water and play 'fetch'. Where's that doggy | Inside the shop

Recognise that awkward feeling when you have to run a quick errand and your pooch has to stay outside the store on the pavement? And the relief when you see your friend is still there when you come back... It's funny that not more shops are dogfriendly, because it's good for business!

Fifty-three percent of consumers surveyed said that they enjoy shopping in stores that allow dogs, and nearly 25% of shoppers answered that they would spend an additional amount at a dogfriendly store. Dogfriendly retailers get more foot traffic: not only we dog owners spend more time and money at pet-friendly stores, but we are also 31% more likely to tell our friends about stores that allow dogs. And on top of all that, dog owners admittedly come back to visit pet-friendly businesses, as opposed to their less pet-friendly counterparts. Surveyed consumers aligned stores that allow pets with being “friendly,” “customer-centric” and “comfortable.”

Dog-centric hotel opening | Best Friends Roadhouse

Being a dogfriendly hotel is obviously an enormous plus and it's our mission to unlock them for you, the discerning owner looking for the good life. This hotel approaches dogfriendly from a totally different angle: a Utah animal sanctuary opened a true pet-centric hotel: Best Friends Roadhouse & Mercantile.

Owned and operated by Best Friends Animal Society—a nonprofit dedicated to ending the killing of dogs and cats in U.S. shelters by 2025—has 40 rooms designed specifically for guests traveling with dog (OK, cats are welcome too...). The pet-centric approach can be seen across the place. Inside the guestrooms, furnishings are built 18 inches or higher to avoid entrapment or accidents; nightstands include little cubbies for smaller animals and beds feature pull-out trundles for large dogs; and all fabrics and materials are pet friendly. And of course they have a great VIP programme for our pooches.

A new way of showcasing design furniture. Throughout the Netherlands, Vrienden (Friends) open their homes to show you the furniture they previously bought.

FRIENDS is not only a new furniture brand with an innovative sales concept, it is also a social design network. It is the result of their desire to bring design to the consumer in a completely different way: you do not view the furniture in a traditional store but with 'Friends', a (inter)national network of private viewing points, which can be found via their site.
By linking the furniture directly to the end user, the design collection also remains advantageous. If the onsite viewing leads to a purchase, the viewing point will receive a 10% Friends Fee. This makes FRIENDS the first social design network in the Netherlands.

Amazing design for the first shop in Vietnam of Japanese cheese tart brand BAKE. To use the property's character which faces a busy street and has a double-height ceiling, the stairs from the entrance to the cashier was designed to show passersby customers are queuing in a vertical direction. It made each tart-display table be stair-like and inside floor for staff be sloped. The idea is to show inside openly rather than constructing an optical border between staff, cakes and customers.

Entrepot Restaurant - Amsterdam

Extreme dogfriendly Restaurant Entrepot Amsterdam has been open since November 2017. They serve exciting but at the same time comfortable dishes and have a wide, quirky wine list. Our restaurant is located on the iconic Entrepotdok, around the corner from the cozy Kadijksplein and a great place to stop for a drink when walking the dog.

Chef Arvid cooks mainly with local and seasonal products, mostly on open fire. From these two pillars he compiles a different high-quality menu every day. Xander and his team ensure the dog gets a bowl of water even before they get the guests their free tapwater and menu.

STAAL Catering is home to colourful, honest food. Sabien Bosman surprises guests and clients in between Amsterdam and Texel with original dishes and great taste. Duvel, her sheepdog, is always around to support. But there is more to this energetic food company, a passion for literature and books.

Sabien Bosman kennen we van STAAL, een fenomeen op de Gedempte Oude Gracht in Haarlem. Een heel andere kant van Sabien is haar interesse in literatuur en haar verzameling almanakken. Haar passie voor Almanakken is ontstaan tijdens haar studie 19e eeuws Nederlands. Haar eerste Almanak ‘Aurora 1942’ kocht ze in 1985. Topstuk in haar verzameling is BRAGA (1842-1844), een soort schelddicht almanak, vol ironie, een ‘Polyglottische staalkaart van Mottoos, waaruit de lezer maar te kiezen heeft...’
